Non-Skiers Guide

There is plenty to do in Megeve for non-skiers and we would love to have your views and contributions

PALAIS DES SPORTS

This has a multitude of activities, including swimming, gym (musculature), climbing wall, covered tennis, curling and sauna. You need to check the opening times as these vary during the season (the swimming pool does not open until the afternoon). If you google Palais Des Sports Megeve you will find the web site which gives opening times and tariffs. The telephone number is 04 50 21 15 71.

HOT AIR BALLOONING

This can be done from Praz Sur Arly which is a few kilometres from Megeve. We have not done this so would welcome comments. The web site is www.alpesmontgolfiere.fr and telephone number is 04 50 55 50 60.

SIGHT SEEING FLIGHTS

This can be done from the Altiport at Cote 2000. You can get the bus there. Flights vary from a 10 minute flight round Megeve to a flight round Mont Blanc and the price varies accordingly. The web site is www.aerocime.com and the telephone number is 04 50 21 03 21.

ARCHITECTURE

The main architect who developed Megeve is Henry Jacques Le Meme. There is a short introduction to his work on our web site. If you would like to know more please speak to Kay Kinnear who would be delighted to give you more information.

DOG SLEDDING

You can try your hand at driving a dog team or just enjoy a ride in a sled. The web site iswww.montduvillardnord.com, telephone number 04 50 21 37 03.

SNOW SHOEING

Contact the Bureau Des Guides 04 50 02 15 51.

TRAIN TRIPS

Take the bus to Le Fayet train station. You can take a train to Annecy and enjoy a day looking round this pretty town. Alternatively, get a train to Martigny. You will need to change trains at the border to one which has a glass roof so that you can see the spectacular scenery. At Martigny you can walk round the ruins of the Roman ampitheatre. Finally there is a train to Geneva and you can walk to the lake or look round the museums.

WALKS

There is a very useful map for walkers entitled Sentiers Pietons which you can get from the tourist office. The numbers refer to the numbers of the paths on this map.

Rochebrune Take the bus to the Rochebrune cable car and go up in the cable car. You can meet friends for lunch at the Supermegeve Restaurant at the top. Alternatively, walk down to the Alpette chair on 1a. (Time 30-40 minutes). You can take the Alpette chair to the top and walk back down to the cable car.

Alternatively, walk up the pedestrian track to the Alpette Restaurant and you can call for a taxi to take you back down if the slope is too steep. (Time 30- 40 minutes)1b After Alpette continue along the ridge to the top of the Petit Fontaine chair which you can take back down. You can then meet friends for lunch at the Javen Restaurant at the bottom of the chair. To return from the PF chair, take 10 to La Maz and get a bus back to Megeve.  To get back to the Sylvana you can walk down the  Grand Chamois piste, or take the Caboche lift to the top and take the Rochebrune cable car home.

Walks 2a,b,c, and d are all walks along roads. On 2d you can take the bus to Croix De Bouchet and continue on foot from there. There are some very nice restaurants at the end of the road, Le Leutaz.

The most popular walk is 7 which is up the Calvaire. Admire the Le Meme studio and chalets before you start the path. There is a nice little restaurant about a third of the way up for drink. Look in the chapels as most of them have a tableau although you are not allowed in. (Time 40-60 minutes) At the top you can take a bus back to Megeve, or you can walk along the road in the direction of Cote 2000 (time 20-30 minutes) and at La Maz take path 8 back to the centre. (Time 30-40 minutes) This can be icy and you may need to get off it and walk down the meadow on the left.

Cote 2000

There are various walks from here. To meet friends for lunch at the Radaz restaurant, which is one our favourites, walk to the left round the ski lift, cross the bridge and take the track on the left. This crosses the piste a couple of times so keep a good look out. (Time 30-40 minutes) Alternatively, friends can ski down to the restaurant at the Altiport and get the bus back to the ski lifts. It is walkable but depends on how good a lunch the skiers have had.

To get home take 9a back to La Maz (Time 60-80 minutes) and if you feel up to it 8 back to Megeve. The path runs beside the road so if you get tired you can get back to the road and a bus stop.

To get to the Lac De Javen and the Javen resturant, take the bus to Mont D’Arbois and get off at Le Planellet (2 stops after Mont D’Arbois). Cross the bridge and go up the slope to La Maz. Pass the chapel on your left and you will see a sign 9a which take you to Cote 200 or 10 to Lac De Javen. (Time 40-60 minutes) You can walk round the lake (this is used for the snow cannon) or stop at the Javen Restaurant at the bottom of the Petit Fontaine chai, where you can meet the skiers for lunch. If you are feeling strong you can take the chair and walk back along the ridge and come down by either the Caboche and Chamois lifts to the centre of town or the Rochebrune cable car. Or you can continue 10 to La Tour and meet friends for lunch at the Terrasse or Caboche Restaurants and return to Megeve by the Chamois lift. (Time 30-40 minutes).

Mont D'Arbois

You can walk round the golf course on 6. This is fairly flat. You can meet friends for lunch at the restaurant behind the golf driving range sheds.  You can take the Mont D’Arbois cabin and then walk over to the Bettex cabin. Turn right out of the cabin and walk down the piste (keep to the side) to a junction of 4 pistes.  Walk up the piste in front of you to the Bettex cabin. (Time 20-30 minutes) You can go down in this to Bettex and meet friends for lunch at one of the restaurants there.

Alternatively take the cabin down to St. Gervais and from there you can take the ski bus into St. Gervais, which is a pretty spa town. Return by the same way.

Finally, you can take the Princesse cabin to the half way station at Encraty. There is a piste de fonde back to Mont D’Arbois although you are not supposed to walk along these pistes.

Jaillet

Take the bus to Jaillet and the cabin to the top. You can take 3a to the bottom of the Christomet chair. (Time 30-40 minutes) From there you can walk down the road to the bottom. There is a bus that comes part of the way up but you will need to check the times. (Time 60 minutes)

Or from the top of the cabin you can follow 3c to the Col De Jaillet. You will need to return by the same route.

MARKETS

The market day for Megeve is Friday morning. This is usually held on the car park by the Palais Des Sports. Sallanches market is Saturday morning and you can get the bus there and back. Chamonix market is also Saturday morning. You could get a bus there and spend the day wandering round.

SPAS

Four hotels in town have spas and well-being centres: Les Fermes De Marie 04 50 93 0310 Fer A Cheval 04 50 21 30 39, Le M de Megeve 04 50 21 41 09 and Alpaga 04 50 91 48 70. These are of a standard similar to Champneys. At Le Fayet there are the St Gervais Les Bains Thermal Baths which use the local hot springs for beauty and medical treatments. The standard is equivalent to the local council swimming pool but the people there are very nice.
